Students at Brisbane South State Secondary College have the opportunity to undertake work experience as part of their Learner-preneur Professional Inquiry into careers, clusters, jobs and pathways.

In 2024, this will occur Term 3, Week 10 for a week-long block or other arrangement negotiated with the College.

Students are responsible to source their own placement and complete the paperwork.

It is important to note that the values of work experience as outlined below, does not mean that you will necessarily be doing the work of the stated job or career.  There are many factors such as age, transport, insurance, workplace risks that prevent young people from doing the exact job that they may desire.  Work experience should give you the opportunity 'to experience a workplace and the types of work that is occurring in a workplace and skills that are necessary'.

For example – students are not able to undertake electrical work as an electrician may do as their daily job, however, working in a trade store or an office that quotes construction jobs or a worksite* where many different types of labour occurs is incredibly valuable.

Benefits and expectations of work experience

Work experience should give you:

  • an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers;
  • an opportunity to explore possible career options;
  • increased self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence;
  • increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training;
  • a better understanding of how the school curriculum can help prepare young people for work;
  • an introduction to workplace recruitment practices;
  • enhanced opportunities for part-time and casual employment;
  • the opportunity to include the employer's work experience evaluation in future job and course applications;
  • opportunities to develop work-related competencies and acquire skills;
  • the chance to 'try out' a workplace.
